How far behind have you fallen?

Contributed by anonymous:

This tells me if I made $98K in 1980 I would have to make $253,953.20 a year in 2008 to live the same lifestyle. Man have I fallen way way behind the eight ball. It's no wonder I am still eating hotdogs and bread with many cut backs to stay alive. I will never see daylight unless I rob a Brinks truck and put the entire take in a CD. Notice I said stay alive!

Maybe you were just overpaid in 1980.

Salaries are determined by market surveys...at least that's what management will tell you. You would think salaries will go up now that we have reduced benefits. That isn't likely.

Alternatives are to just deal with it or find a new job.

LLNS will be able to save a lot of money on salaries as inflation heads to double digits and they hand out 2% raises for the staff. Take a 10% inflation rate for five years and only 2% annual raises and you'll be seeing some pretty severe declines in your living standard. High inflation is a large part of the way in which NNSA and LLNS will be able to implement stealth salary "reductions" over the next few years.

It is not just the lab. Salaries in general haven't kept up with inflation. It is all over the news.

Also, the CPI is not accurate, inflation is much higher than the government reports. Why don't they report the real numbers? Because they would have to pay out more for pensions and SS.

Look at shadowstats.com for more details on real inflation.

2%? try 0 to 2% with 2% being very high! I averaged .60% the last 3 years!

"I averaged .60% the last 3 years!"
I got .125%, which cost more to enter in the system than the raise itself!

I'm hearing more and more stories of good lab scientists who are finding jobs that pay as much, if not more, than what they are currently making at the NNSA labs.

They days of the weapon labs offering lucrative jobs plus a great place in which to work are over. The best can do better.
